I participated in the first Eiger Ultra Trail, a 101km run around the hills of Grindelwald, Switzerland. There was a total of 6700 meters of climbing and descending with the highest point being the summit of Faulhorn (2680m). The views of the Eiger, Jungfrau and surrounding mountains provided a breathtaking backdrop for an incredible event.

Highlights included, in chronological order:

Sunrise lighting up the tip of the Eiger

Amazing wildflowers

Random bloody nose

Glissading/shoe skiing down snowfields off the Faulhorn

Slipping on and then falling in slippery wet cow shit.

At the an aid station I took a mouthful of what I expected to be cubed apples but was actually hot sweaty "Mountain Cheese"

The heat

Seeing Aileen at the halfway aid station and telling her that I was feeling pretty fine despite being covered in sweat, blood and cow shit

Thunderstorm that washed off sweat, blood and cow shit

Diving and then hunkering into a ditch after lightning struck chairlift pole right in front of me.

Bombing off mountain to get away from the lightning

Lounging in Wengernalp station for about 40 minutes waiting for thunderstorms to pass and for the race to resume.

Being told to continue although we weren't allowed up the climb to Eigergletscher and took an alternate route down the valley.

The last 12k which was mostly downhill, I felt amazingly fresh and strong and passed people.

Finishing

Expecting totally thrashed quads, my leg muscles were not sore after the race which was really confusing. My main theory is that I experienced The Repeated-bout Effect because I did a big fast downhill run on the Tuesday before the race which gave me sore quads that lasted up until raceday.

An ultramarathon that runs the length of Lysefjord starting in Oanes and ending in Lysebotn. The route follows roads and trails along the northside of the fjord featuring some pretty rough terrain. Thanks so much to Willy Steinskog and his crew for putting on an incredible event.
But, when you try to go to x.x.x.x, you are blocked because you were routed through the internet instead of the VPN.

Solution: Add a route to your routing table to force network traffic through the VPN and add rules to your firewall because the default rules set up by Cisco AnyConnect won't allow this traffic.

Steps:
1) Sign into the VPN and open a command terminal. Note, I'm using version 3.0.11024 for this.

2) Get the destination IP address if you don't already know it. You could try pinging the hostname if thats all you have. Make note of it.

DESTINATION_IP=x.x.x.x

3) Get the IP address of the VPN gateway. Look at you network interfaces using the ifconfig command. Cisco AnyConnect should have added it, identified by an interface id called utun0 (Mac) or cscotun0 (Linux). Or, look at your AnyConnect client. The IP address should be in there somwhere as "Client Address". Make note of it.

VPN_GATEWAY_IP=y.y.y.y

On Mac OS X:

4) Add the route to your routing table. I would suggest listing the routing table before and after adding the new route to ensure it gets added. List the routing table using the command netstat -nr. Add the new route with this command

sudo route add -host $DESTINATION_IP $VPN_GATEWAY_IP

5) Add rules to the firewall to allow all IP traffic to and from the destination using the VPN network interface. Again, look at the existing rules before and after using the command sudo ipfw list to ensure it gets added. Insert the rules with these 2 commands

sudo ipfw add 00025 skipto 33 ip from $VPN_GATEWAY_IP to $DESTINATION_IP out

sudo ipfw add 00025 skipto 33 ip from $DESTINATION_IP to $VPN_GATEWAY_IP in

### NOTE: Line numbers 00025 and 33 worked for me, but these are dependent on the rules that your VPN client has defined. The important thing is that the new rules go before the rule "deny ip from any to any" and skipto goes beyond it.

On Linux:

The steps are the same as described above but syntax is different. Here are the commands you'll need. You will probably have to do these with sudo or as root

4) Add the route to your routing table using the route command. I would suggest listing the routing table before and after adding the new route to ensure it gets added. List the routing table using the command route alone. Add the new route with this command

route add $DESTINATION_IP gw $VPN_GATEWAY_IP

5) Add rules to the firewall to allow all IP traffic to and from the destination using the VPN network interface. Again, look at the existing rules before and after using the command iptables -L to ensure it gets added. Insert the rules with these 2 commands

iptables -I ciscovpn 32 -j ciscovpnfw -p all -s $DESTINATION_IP/32 -d $VPN_GATEWAY_IP

iptables -I ciscovpn 32 -j ciscovpnfw -p all -d $DESTINATION_IP/32 -s $VPN_GATEWAY_IP

### NOTE: Line number 32 worked for me. The important thing is that the new rules go before the rule "DROP all -- anywhere anywhere"

You could obviously modify the steps above to grant access to a whole network or range of IP address if required.
I got up to Leadville on Wednesday afternoon. When I signed up for Leadville, I imagined spending a couple weeks camping at elevation so that I'd be nicely acclimated to race, but getting there on Wednesday was the best I could do. Thursday and Friday I really just focused on recovering from the travel and poor sleep, relaxing and reviewing the course and aid stations. I tried to maintain my jet lag, going to bed at 8pm and getting up as late as possible which was around 4am, the time that the run would start on Saturday.

Almost all of my training for the Leadville 100 was on very rough, rocky, steep muddy trails East of Stavanger or roads. Leadville's trails are long, non-technical, gradual climbs and descents.

Because I didn't get any training at altitude, or on any big peaks, and only a few days of acclimation before the race, this really was the first race in a long time that I just wanted to finish and didn't care about my time as long as it was before the 30 hour cut-off.

I woke up at 2am on race morning and ate plenty of oatmeal. Keith and Dad joined me at the 4am start which was pretty exciting, about 40 degrees, calm and clear skies. The gun went off and the combination of nerves and a gently descending dirt road section made it challenging to keep is slow. The turquoise lake trail was amazing. At several points you could see headlamps lighting up the shoreline along the trail ahead and behind. After a few miles, the trail got a little rougher and I was caught behind a few bottlenecks. I didn't make any effort to pass anyone as I didn't think it was worth the effort so early in the race. It got light enough to turn off the headlamp a couple miles before the aid station. Coming into Mayqueen aid station (mile 13.5) was great with lots of people cheering. I actually ran right by the tent with the food and once I realised it, didn't want to back track so I kept going which felt pretty dumb. Skipping the first aid station was not part of the plan. I still had enough fluid and a couple gels so I just went for it.

The next several miles were uneventful and nice. The descent down Powerline felt great to stride it out a bit. The road section was fine. I took the opportunity to talk to other runner which helped pass the miles. The Colorado Trail was really nice and I could see why some people say this is their favorite part of the course. Great trail through the forest and very runnable.

Coming into Twin Lakes (mile 40), I was energized knowing I'd see my crew, and happy that the first 40 miles were behind me with no issues. I was also really excited to finally meet my new nephew, Henry, for the first time. Twin Lakes didn't dissapoint. I ate lots of watermelon and pretzels, found my crew, hugged Henry, grabbed my poles and headed out.

Climbing Hope Pass the first time wasn't bad. I got in with a couple others who were nice and steady. Above about 11,500 ft, I was feeling pretty sluggish from the altitude which I expected and knew I had to take it real easy for the miles ahead. Again I was excited to see Q&C atop Hope Pass taking pictures. At the top I tightened my shoes, hugged Mato and headed down the other side.

Cruising down the pass was great. My legs were feeling strong although my pace down was pretty slow. At the bottom of the pass, my Dad was waiting. He was hanging out ready to pace me up Hope Pass the second time but first I had to get to and from the Winfield turnaround. The route turned onto the new Continental Divide section, avoiding the dusty road below. This was a great trail, but a little disheartening as it climbed slightly with lots of rollers and added about 0.8 miles each way. I couldn't really find a rhythm on this trail and had to walk a lot, then I started to feel bad for the first time of the race. I think the effort over Hope Pass had taken its toll and I hadn't done a great job of eating. I was feeling worse and worse and just focused on getting to the aid station.

I shuffled into Winfield, trying not to think about the fact that most people drop there. At the aid station, there was a mandatory weigh-in to ensure runners were drinking enough. I got in line which moved quickly and when it was my turn, the electronic scale stopped working. The medical volunteer did her best, stomping and kicking it while staying calm and giving me some reassuring words. I think I looked pretty sad. Pretty quickly, they got another scale in and I weighed in at 154 lbs. 1 pound heavier than pre-race weigh-in. This made me feel a little better knowing I had been sipping well for the first 50 miles.

I found a seat in the food tent which was my first time sitting all day. I could only stomach a few pretzels and half a cup of coke. I tried a peanutbutter and honey sandwich but it wasn't happening. I sat for a few more minutes and knew I had to just get up and keep moving. There was a climb out of Winfield which I knew I'd be walking so I took my time and just tried to pull myself together. The crowds of people were great but there were a few cars congesting the road and the fumes made me kind of nauseous. Getting back onto the trail, I saw a few familiar faces of other runners that I had met earlier in the day and most of them didn't look great either. About 10 minutes out of Winfield, just about as quickly as I deteriorated, I suddenly felt better. Wow, I was getting a second wind. Within a couple more minutes I felt amazing and was running again. Now I was loving the new trail, cruising along and actually looking forward to climing Hope Pass with my Dad.

My Dad was still waiting ready to go. We took it really steady as we were heading up the steeper side of the pass. My Dad's company was great. He was pretty out of breath on the lower steeper half, but then seemed to get stronger as we went up. Near treeline it rained a little, but nothing serious. I started suffering again for the lat 1000 feet or so and just focused on getting to the top. The top was cold and windy now. I put on my jacket and headed down. I just wanted to get to the llama aid station and get some warm soup. I got in there and found a nice seat and sipped a whole cup of soup. This was the first of many cups of soup that were like magic potion. I tried a few M&M but they actually weren't good. Too sweet. Running back down, I found my Dad again who passed me while I was sipping soup. We just had a few words and I kept going.

Arriving at Twin Lakes the second time (mile 60), I was so excited to hear that Murtaza had decided to pace me for the next section which was going to be tough. A big climb out of Twin Lakes then the darkness. This section went well and I settled into a fast walk which felt pretty efficient although I wasn't running much anymore. I started feeling low again before the Halfpipe aid station, but some soup there, and I was getting my third wind.

Keith and I headed up the Powerline climb. I was feeling pretty good and we were talking quite a bit. We kept a steady pace for the long seemingly endless climb. Getting higher, it got cold and exposed. The climb was long but we kept moving. We had all our clothes on as it was probably dipping into the 30's. Toward the top I started feeling pretty low again and could only think about soup again. The rough trail cutting across to Mayqueen was pretty ugly. I was using the poles a lot just to keep me upright. Mayqueen was a feast. 2 cups of soup, a cup of coffee, some chips and pretzels.

Heading out of Mayqueen I was feeling really good. I was pretty confident we were going to make it and knowing the sun was going to be rising soon gave me a boost. We kept a pretty decent walking pace around the lake and picked up Rebecca with about 8 miles to go. The 3 of us hit the road with 6 miles to go and started passing people like crazy. These last miles were so much fun. With about 1 mile to go my Mom ran out to meet us. We ran down 6th street feeling great, finishing in 27 hours and 53 minutes, just before 8am on Sunday.

Next time, have pacers bring a small flask with hot soup in it and sip it regularly. It was amazing how quickly I would feel better after soup. If I could have kept topped up on soup, maybe I wouldn't have had as many lows.

It was a 14km trail run with 900m of climbing, taking in 7 peaks in the hills to the east of Sandnes. Awesome circuit on awesome trails. The route was pretty well marked but having never seen any of the trails before, I found the route finding a little tough in spots and got off course a couple times. At the finish I got a nice pin and coffee and waffles.

What a night. Last weekend I ran the Art O'Neill Challenge Ultra, a 55k night run from Dublin Castle to Glenmalure Valley through the bog over unmarked terrain. This is the second year I've done it and it remains one of my favorite events. This year we had incredibly good conditions, clear skies, temps right around freezing and a 70% full moon. The weeks before the race were mild so there was no snow and very little ice. This year, Aileen did it too. It was so nice to share the surrealistic feelings of going to the start of an ultra through the debauchery of Dublin on a Friday night.

The start was fast. Everyone went out fast and I tried my best to keep it steady. The miles went by very quickly and I was feeling great. As the road steepened I started passing several runners and took on some food and drink from my camelback. There was a bit of frost on the road making it a little slick but nothing like last year. I stuck to the grassy patch in the middle of the road which gave a bit more traction. Checkpoint 1 (mile 12) was chaos with drop bags everywhere and hikers finding their groups. I found my bag, dumped my camelback and picked up my heavier pack. I didn't bother trying to get food, I just wanted to get out of there and keep moving.

I was still feeling good heading up the steep road to Ballynultagh Gap (mile 19) and was excited to get off the road and into the bog. Getting to the top of black hill was incredible with a big bright moon lighting up the hills making navigation an pretty easy for this section. I could see exactly where I needed to go. I started running down the other side of black hill and within a few steps, both calves started cramping. The cramps subsided pretty quickly but instantly made me question what was going on. I didn't think the pace or hillyness should have caused leg cramps at this point so I assumed it must have been a touch of dehydration. Over the next few miles I sipped all 70 ounces in my pack which I had intended to last the rest of the race, but knowing I could refill at Checkpoint 2 (mile 25), I figured it was my only hope for managing the cramps. I could only see a couple of occasional lights ahead of me and at least a dozen lights behind. Over Billy Byrne's gap and down the other side I took it pretty easy, mainly for fear of bog holes as this section has some leg smashers. After crossing the river, I kept a pretty good pace but I could feel the leg cramps just waiting to strike. Any time I would stumble or do something weird, which was probably every couple minutes, my legs would cramp up. I took a pretty bad line through one of the river crossings which were deep gullies after the flooding earlier in the year. I slid down the bank onto some rocks, and I had to pull a bouldering move to get over the overhanging bog wall on the other side. I kept my elevation at 1200ft which I knew would get me to the gap in the forest and the dirt road. A few times I fell completely and my legs would totally seize with cramps. The only thing I could do is get up and keep running to ease the cramps out.

I made it Checkpoint 2, refilled my hydration bladder, ate a bowl of porridge with jam and a redbull. Geroid told me I was in fifth about 5 minutes behind Zoran and 30 behind Eoin and Paul. I hoped the fluids and food would sink in and take care of the cramps. The short section of forest road loosened up my legs a bit. Climbing up towards Art's Cross it was still totally dark and the mist started coming in. The moon was gone so navigation became more of an issue. Stumbling across the nastiest section of bog over to 3 Lakes, the cramps were back and I was a mess. I could see lights over my shoulder closing in on me. It was grim. I took bad line along the river at the top of Glenmalure Valley and could see a light pass me to the left on the higher line that I had intended to take. It was still dark and I didn't really find the good goat path along the Avonbeg river. I finally got to Table Track and Bruce and Thure were right behind me. They caught me and I tried to stay with them for about 1km but at that point I just wanted to make it down the rocky sections in one piece. I finished in 7th with a time of 6:05:56, 1 hour 25 minutes faster than last year. There were several factors contributing to the faster time, shorter course, grippier conditions on the road, great visibility making navigation easier and also being able to see runners ahead and behind, and lastly a competitive field driving the pace the whole race.

Thanks again to Gearoid and his team for putting on an excellent event. I can't wait to do it again.
I set off into the dark at 6am, it was 0º F, brr.
I put the microspikes on at Gorgoza Park and wore them the whole run except for the brief road section at the end of East Perimeter trail. Toll Canyon is awesome in the dark, really calm and quiet. I got to the top of
Summit Park Peak just before dawn and hung out there for a few minutes
savoring the view. Heading back down into Toll Canyon was pretty incredible with the sun rising. Turning onto the West Perimeter trail there
were no new human tracks since the last storm, but some pretty fresh
moose tracks. A couple minutes later, I found the moose. Up onto the
west side of Pinebrook Peak, I saw 2 more moose, then onto the top of
Pinebrook peak. I came down the steep east side of Pinebrook Peak which was fun, and followed
the ridge and cut a big switchback following moose tracks that stayed on
the ridge. When I got to the Roosevelt bench there were 2 more moose. I went down East
perimeter, onto the road, back up Ecker hill and then down to home.
Great run and 6 moose. Here are a few pics.
I came across an issue today that took me a while to figure out so I thought I'd share to hopefully help someone out someday.

I'm working on RackSpace cloud servers configuring and compiling packages for a web application. We are also using RackConnect, a service from RackSpace that allows the cloud servers to coexist in a private network with dedicated servers. I started with base CentOS 6.0 image and used yum to install a few packages that I would need. Well, I inadvertently installed NetworkManager which was the source of my problems.

After a reboot, both network interfaces eth0 and eth1 were coming up with the same IP address. Looking at other 'working' cloud servers I could see that only eth1 was configured with the private IP address and eth0 was disabled.

I confirmed with RackSpace support that the contents of /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth* were correct, but NetworkManager doesn't use these so it was configuring them unexpectedly. It was assigning the private IP address to both interfaces creating an address conflict. I could recreate this by doing

/etc/init.d/NetworkManager restart

which would create the address conflict, and then

/etc/init.d/network restart

which would correctly assign the private IP to eth1 and leave eth0 inactive.

Because this will eventually be an application server, there won't be a need for NetworkManager so my fix was to remove NetworkManager from loading during boot.

/sbin/chkconfig --del NetworkManager

I should mention that I've used NetworkManager on laptops and desktops for years and it works great, but it really shouldn't be installed in a server environment that will probably have static addresses anyway.
Timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00669296871486389843noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2291316145145033724.post-91446170334126775672011-12-19T18:49:00.000-08:002011-12-20T09:36:30.295-08:00Black-bellied Whistling Ducks

There hasn't been much new snow recently so I thought it might be doable if snowshoers had packed it out. Heading up to Pinebrook Peak was perfect in microspikes, but past that there was really only animal tracks and a couple ski tracks. I stayed on the west side of the ridge where the snow was thin but then eventually dropped over the ridge onto the trail. The rest of the trail was mainly uneven crusty moose tracks and shin deep post-holing, not very runnable but I still enjoyed it. When I got to The Canyons I coasted down the groomers which was really nice after miles of slogging.

Runkeeper Map

Timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00669296871486389843noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2291316145145033724.post-53490306070173349152011-12-10T22:03:00.000-08:002011-12-12T19:40:46.657-08:00Ducks & Drums
Here's some action from our week in Houston.
